Niche Pokemon in Competitive

In competitive play, niche means a Pokemon that does one job and little else. This dictionary lists 15 roles from the Scarlet and Violet OU role compendium, the names that fill them, and why each one is a specialist.

How to read the roles

Smogon’s SV OU role compendium groups jobs into utility, offense, and defense, and it sets “Niche Pokemon that are C+ or less” aside with a bar. The fifteen rows on this page follow that structure: hazard setters, Defog, Rapid Spin, offensive pivots, defensive pivots, physical and special wallbreakers, setup sweepers, priority revenge killers, Wish clerics, screen setters, weather, terrain, Trick Room, and phazers. The representative names come from that thread. I did not invent a second list.

“Why only this role” is my sentence about the job, not a usage statistic. Great Tusk, Kingambit, and several other examples are not in the 67-species table, and they do not get detail pages. Delcatty’s Normalize line is the extreme case: one ability, a clear cost against Ghost, and a Smogon analysis that says so. Champions teams are a different rule set, so they live on niche pokemon champions instead of being pasted into these OU rows.

RoleFormatRepresentativesWhy this jobStatus
Entry hazard setterSV OUgliscor, ting-lu, skarmory, garganaclIts value is the hazard it leaves behind; it usually has no reliable way to beat the opposing hazard remover one-on-one.2 sources
Defog removerSV OUcorviknight, mandibuzz, talonflameIt spends a moveslot and a turn on removal, so it is usually a defensive Flying-type that can afford the slot.2 sources
Rapid Spin removerSV OUgreat-tusk, iron-treads, torkoalThe Speed boost makes Rapid Spin a tempo move, not just a defensive one; the user still has to survive to use it.2 sources
Offensive pivotSV OUcinderace, dragapult, meowscarada, lokixIt needs a fast, safe switch move; without it the same Pokemon would just be a frail attacker.2 sources
Defensive pivotSV OUalomomola, corviknight, gliscor, rotom-washIts bulk and typing are the point; the pivot move lets it bring a frail partner in for free.2 sources
Physical wallbreakerSV OUkingambit, great-tusk, ogerpon, ursalunaIt is built to trade damage, not to sweep; its low Speed or poor coverage usually stops it from cleaning up.2 sources
Special wallbreakerSV OUgholdengo, iron-moth, kyurem, darkraiIt needs the opponent's special wall gone; its own bulk is usually too low to switch in repeatedly.2 sources
Setup sweeperSV OUgliscor, kingambit, mimikyu, ceruledgeIt needs one free turn to set up; if it is forced out before that, the stat boosts are lost.2 sources
Priority revenge killerSV OUdragonite, scizor, weavile, talonflameIt only works on weakened targets; the priority move is usually weak without a boost.2 sources
Wish clericSV OUalomomola, clefable, blisseyIt gives up offensive pressure to keep the team healthy; Wish takes a turn to land.2 sources
Screen setterSV OUgrimmsnarl, ninetales-alola, deoxys-speedIt is a support lead: once the screens are up, its job is mostly done.2 sources
Weather setterSV OU / VGCpelipper, torkoal, tyranitar, politoedIts ability is the whole reason to use it; the setter itself is usually slow or offensively mediocre.2 sources
Terrain setterSV OU / VGCrillaboom, indeedee, pincurchinThe terrain is the team slot's payoff; the setter rarely wants to stay in for long.2 sources
Trick Room setterVGC / SV OUhatterene, cresselia, porygon2, indeedeeIt must survive the turn it sets Trick Room, and it is dead weight once the room expires.2 sources
PhazerSV OUskarmory, ting-lu, dragoniteIt is a reactive answer to setup; it does nothing against a team that is not boosting.2 sources

FAQ

What is an extremely niche Pokemon for competitive?

A Pokemon whose value is one job. Delcatty with Normalize, or a Trick Room setter that has nothing to do once the room expires, are the shape of that answer.

Do these roles apply to Pokemon Champions?

Not directly. This table is Scarlet and Violet OU. Champions Regulation M-C has its own teams page.
