Niche Pokemon Interactions

Some Pokemon are only worth using because two mechanics overlap. Normalize turns Thunder Wave into an answer for Ground-types. Wonder Guard turns 1 HP into a long list of immunities. Poison Heal turns a Toxic Orb into recovery. These are 14 such combos.

Three combos worth reading first

Normalize, on Delcatty, makes the user’s moves Normal-type. Thunder Wave is normally blocked against Ground-types. Smogon’s Delcatty page is the competitive write-up of that overlap, and Pokemon Database is the ability text. I am not claiming a damage number beyond what those pages print.

Shedinja has 1 HP and Wonder Guard. Bulbapedia’s trivia and Pokemon Database agree that only a damaging move of a type it is weak to gets through. That is why the interaction is the whole Pokemon. Poison Heal plus a Toxic Orb is the opposite shape: the item badly poisons the holder, and the ability turns that poison into recovery. The ability text is the source. I do not add a turn-by-turn HP script.

The other rows in the table — weather, terrain, and item overlaps — use the same rule. If the entity file has an effect sentence from a public page, it is printed. If a number was missing, the cell stays empty. Role names for the same Pokemon, when they are OU jobs rather than combos, are on niche pokemon competitive.

FAQ

What is a niche Pokemon interaction?

A combo where an ability, item, or move changes the usual rule. Normalize plus Thunder Wave, and Wonder Guard on Shedinja, are the two I would quote first.

Do these combos work in every generation?

Only in the generations named on that row. Ability text has changed. The table’s generation note is the boundary, and a blank note means I did not confirm a span.
